Happened to encounter DC on its first heat wave day for the season. So I went from winter (Saturday) to summer (Wednesday) in four days. Awesome, but wasn't really prepared for 30 degrees.
Since we had to take advantage of the fine weather, the Smithsonian and all the other fine museums DC apparently has to offer wasn't even on the map. Went with the mall which is a large park with plenty of monuments and large buildings surrounding it.
Capitol Hill
World War II memorial up front (the one with fountains), Lincoln memorial further away (the one with all the pillars), in the middle Lincoln Memorial Reflection Pool (the one without fountains). The people taking photos are probably not interested in me but in the Washington Monument which is behind me.
Friend by WWII memorial again.
Having my second ice cream for the day. Feeling very patriotic picking this one and it just happened to match the people passing by.
Everyone else also decided to visit the Mall today! When I asked a guard working there he said it was normally crowded today though..
Famous location of speeches and rallies.
The famous American body.
Tidal Basin in front of Jefferson Memorial.
On the way to which you pass by a memorial over Franklin D Roosevelt (this is its toilet). The man looks like taken out of the Yogi Bear cartoon, Ranger Smith at your service!
At the Jefferson Memorial.
My friend and I were sitting down enjoying the afternoon sun contemplating the memorials we had seen. We then spotted this guy with a single red rose looking nervously at his watch. We assumed he was waiting for a blind-date or similar and decided to wait and see if she would show. We waited and we waited. The man got more and more nervous and also perspired lightly. After what seemed like an eternity but what must have been about half an hour a woman showed up, clearly late, running. The man walked towards her and went down on one knee in front of Jefferson and at least a dozen or so spectators. Another public proposal! When she said yes and they kissed everyone applauded! Then lots of people came over and shook his hand and wished them well. This was really a time when it struck me how different their mentality is to ours.
You didn't capture another most important aspect of the American body: the shoulder wide neck! But a splendid profile view all the same...
ReplyDeleteWere you close to tears as well but couldn't get yourself to admit it? :|
ReplyDeleteHow come you didn't get pictures of the act itself?
ReplyDeleteI was in shock! Wasn't prepared for this huge PDA. Also somewhat embarrassed which explains why there are no photos. All of a sudden this super public place is someones living room.
